Suburban Club
The Suburban Club of Haskell was organized in 1955. The present membership consists of seventeen talented individuals who enjoy sharing and showing their handcrafts at monthly meetings in member's homes. A wide variety includes: sewing, crochet, quilting, crafting, flower arranging, painting, and home decorating. In 2001 the club applied for the Arkansas State Highway Department "Adopt-A Spot" Program and planted flowers in the triangle near Haskell City Hall (see photo above). Volunteers donated labor, equipment, dirt, plants, stones, and a sign to create a beauty spot at the highly visible intersection of Highway 229 and Grand Avenue. The club made additions this year and maintains the spot by seeding and pruning.
In 2002, the Club gave the Haskell Community Center a “face lift”, which included adding and equipping a kitchen in the Center, and painting and wallpaper all other areas. In addition, the exterior of the Center, along with the pavilion, was painted, shutters were added, and extensive landscaping was done. Once again, volunteers gave of themselves to update this Community gathering place.
In 2003, the Club began construction of a Memorial sidewalk and flower garden at the Community Center. Individuals could donate the cost of the monogrammed brick, which served as a lasting tribute to honor family members, friends, classmates, etc. The project was done in three phases, and was completed in 2007.
After a tornado struck the Community on October 18, 2004, the Club rallied, delivering food, and collecting donated items needed for those people who suffered loss.
On March 4, 2006, the Club hosted a chili supper and silent auction as a benefit for the Haskell Volunteer Fire Department to purchase thermal imaging equipment.
On December 19, 2006, the Club helped host a Christmas party for the Head Start students at Harmony Grove School, complete with pizza, drinks and presents.
On June 10, 2007, the Club hosted an Open House for the newly remodeled Haskell Fire Station.
At the present, unable physically to do such activities as listed above, the Club contributes yearly to the Bill Gibbs Memorial Scholarship Fund at Harmony Grove School.
