Haskell Gets $50K State Block Grant

The City of Haskell was one of 12 rural communities selected for funding through the Rural Services Block Grant Program for the fiscal year 2010. Haskell’s award is for $50,000. The money will be used to purchase the City’s first ever ladder truck for the City’s Fire Department, said Haskell Mayor Jeff Arey.

Among those present for the ceremony in which the awards were distributed at the State Capitol were; Mayor Arey, Rep Barbara Nix, D-Benton, who represents Haskell in District 28, and Haskell Fire Chief Brian Cotten.

The City of Haskell has been the most successful awarded City in Saline County in this program. In the past few years alone grants from this program have helped Haskell build a Sub-Station on Grand Avenue, purchase a new rescue unit, provide new turnouts to all the members of the Fire Department, and purchase new air packs. Chief Brian Cotten expects the ladder truck to be in service by the end of July 2010.
